The Tel Dan Stele
Discovered in 1993–94 at Tel Dan, in northern Israel.
Found in broken fragments reused in an ancient wall.
Written in Old Aramaic, likely by Hazael of Aram-Damascus (9th century BCE).
Contains the phrase “bytdwd” (“House of David”), making it the first archaeological evidence outside the Bible to reference David’s dynasty.
Now displayed in the Israel Museum.
What the Balaam Stone Is
Known formally as the Deir ‘Alla Inscription.
Discovered in 1967 at Deir ‘Alla, in the Jordan Valley.
Written in ink on plaster, not carved in stone—making it unique among ancient Near Eastern inscriptions.
Dates to around 825 BCE.
The “Balaam Stone” refers to the Deir ‘Alla Inscription, a remarkable 8th-century BCE plaster text discovered in Jordan that preserves the earliest known extra-biblical account of Balaam son of Beor—the same prophetic figure from Numbers 22–24.It is one of the most important West Semitic inscriptions ever found, both linguistically and theologically.
